Missed Opportunities

During the Art in the Sun workshop we took some time to visit Dixie College Invitational Exhibit. I loved this piece (sorry for the flash on the top) by artist/eductaor Jerry Hancock.

The painting is part of his "Faces of Africa" series- oil/pastel paintings inspired by photographs he had an opportunity to view from an African medical mission.

Seeing his beautiful work brought back a major regret in my life. As a high school student I enrolled in Advanced Placement art. Jerry was a junior high teacher at the time and I was directed to him for help in producing a portfolio. He agreed to take time after school to work with me.

I went one time, he was gracious and serious about helping me. I enjoyed the lesson and worked on a pointillism piece with roses. That was our only lesson. Being an immature teenager I decided it was more important to spend time with my friends and drop AP art. Today I regret missing out on a great learning opportunity.
