Kids Art Class- Personalized Portfolios

Recently I started teaching a new art class for kids 8-12. In the first lesson we began creating personalized portfolios for their future artwork.

Before class I scored full sheets of poster board, folded them in half and taped up the edges with packing tape to make a big pocket folder for each student.

At the beginning of class we took a few minutes to write down favorites...color, holiday, activity, etc. on a piece of paper. I also had them write words that described them.

We talked about artist's portfolios. I showed them some examples and we talked about how they could use those things they had written about themselves to personalize their own portfolios.

With #2 pencils the class was encouraged to draw lightly, big, and overlap using ideas from the lists they had made.

By the end of the hour most of the class was still working on their drawings.

We decided to complete the project in the next lesson (which will post soon). You can find it here.

  2. This is a wonderful project for kids. My DIL's sister is also an art teacher for a wide age range of children. Do you mind if I tell her about your project? nancy

  3. Thanks Phthaoloblu & Nanke for your comments. Nanke, I posted the lesson hoping it might be of use to others. Although the way I present a class may be unique(or not)I'm sure the ideas have been taught by many others before me.

When we share ideas it makes us all better teachers and better artists.

  4. Joanne, thanks for posting this. Mason is LOVING the class. Plus he thinks your super cool since you knew all about Super Mario Bros and could talk-the-talk with him. You made quite the impression and probably a fan for life!
I love the portfolios. It's such a great way to keep all their projects organized. THANKS!

  5. I love this idea. It can also jump start a few writing projects. I'm going to do one for myself and then present it to my class.
