Experiencing the most significant works of art does not necessarily mean an expensive trip to a far away museum. Many museums now offer interactive, or in some cases 3D, exhibits and experiences that can be enjoyed online. Here is a list of 15 online museums and art galleries you can visit today.
Louvre Museum - One of the world's greatest museums, the Louvre Museum offers an interactive 3D website with in-depth content. Online visitors can view the museums 175,000 permanent pieces and experience the building and its history in 3D.
Museum of Modern Art - Dedicated to modern and contemporary art, this museum contains a huge online database for exploration and learning. You can experience the museum through works, video, and audio.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art - The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known as The Met, contains a permanent exhibit of over 2 million pieces. The online museum also contains a large searchable database of The Met's permanent collection for online viewers to explore.
CAMIO - The CAMIO or Catalog of Art Museums Images Online contains a huge database of 95,000 art images online. This database of rights-cleared images for educational use features images along with audio, video, and multimedia.
Smithsonian Institute - The Smithsonian Institute is a magnificent educational and research facility housing the world's largest museum complex. Their online site features a virtual database of art, science, and history museum exhibits.
The Tate - This national art gallery houses the greatest collection of British art. The Tate features large full color pictures of its entire collection online along with in-depth explanations.

I have to admit I've only visited the Louvre :( which is sad because the others are in the US. Great list though!
