Value

These pictures are assignments from a drawing class in my first year of college. The object was to teach us to look at values. First we took a reference (I have forgotten the information on this source) and copied the piece with only one dark value and the white of the paper.

Then we took the same reference and drew it again only this time we added one mid tone value.

For this third assignment we copied artwork from another artist. My reference was Grant Wood's American Gothic. This time we used a full range of values. It was done with charcoal on gesso covered masonite.

These assignments were a lot of work. At the time I couldn't see any purpose other than to keep us busy for hours. I wish I had been ready then to internalize the importance of value in art. What things have you done that have helped you to better see values and incorporate them into your art?

  2. Anne thanks for your comment. Do you do anything special with your students to help them understand values? I am always looking for new ideas.
