While decorating my son's room in a jungle theme, I bought three frames for his walls. The first two I filled with animal paintings I had done in a past class- one of a frog and another of a couple of giraffes. I also hung the third frame -empty.

I reasoned that if I hung the third frame with no painting this would be a daily reminder that I needed to paint the piece for that frame. I have a very hard time staying with a project long enough to finish. I made plans for the painting that would hang in that frame- a painting of elephants, fairly loose and with a blurred background to match the other two paintings.
It has been almost five years now since I hung those frames. The third frame is still empty. Oh, I've started the elephant painting several times... at least six that I can remember. Each time I get to a point where I just don't like it. There is some metal block with this project.
Man...not finishing work...I do that way too often. In fact there is a picture I should have done by Christmas that I am only just finishing up. :( I've noticed usually I get discouraged in the middle of a painting when I haven't spent enough time on developing the composition, drawing, and color comps (all the pre-work...) In other words if I don't spend time on all the stages it is ugly and I get discouraged. Anyways that's usually what it is for me.
ReplyDeleteI think you nailed my problem. I don't spend enough time in the planning process.
ReplyDeleteIt's just sooo fun to jump in and start painting...but then half way through the problems start.
Yes! You are both on target. It is hard to have the discipline when I first start a painting, I want to jump in before I get distracted by something else. Thank you both for the insight!
ReplyDeleteNow that I know what the problem is - I can work to correct it.
